Music can touch your soul, make you happy, make you mad or make you remember the first time someone dumped you -- for me that's "How do I live without you" by LeAnn Rimes. Lol...now that I think of it he did me a huge favor, but anyway, I digress.

Music can help a woman to relax during childbirth and the more relaxed you are the less pain you feel. When the body is tense you bring unnecessary pain to yourself and since the uterus is also a muscle you want to make sure that you create a relaxed environment for yourself. Soft melodic music with the lights dim is a great combination to set the mood for brining your bundle of joy into the world without the use of narcotic drugs.

It was quite a tedeous task for me to find the right music for labor and delivery so I have to thank my wonderful husband for creating my playlist for me. So here are my top choices;

Hymns of Worship By Fernando Ortega
This is my favorite! You just have to hear it! The most relaxing melodic music I've ever heard! When it was hard for me so sleep in the third trimester my hubby played it for me and I would sleep like a baby. Love it!!!

Quiet Moments Of Instrumental Worship By David Bauer
Ahhhh. Such amazing instrumentation. This CD takes my mind to heaven and I still listen to it when I've had a long day with the kids. The songs are soft and beautiful and helped so much during labor and delivery.

Serenity from the Harp By Sally Fletcher
There is something about the harp that brings serenity and peace. David played it for King Saul to calm him. While the rocking pain of contractions came these selections really helped to calm my soul and take my mind to a more peaceful place.

These are all Christian music for natural childbirth. I needed my mind to be on heaven during this time. For me, labor and delivery is something that I wanted God to help me with. I needed His peace, strength and wisdom. Not only for bringing our children into the world--but to give them into His hands and know that with His help I will raise them well and He would do the rest.

Love At First Sight

Here it is! The picture of the time big brother first held Baby P :) I just love it! I love the overflowing love that VJ visibly has for his brother. It's like he's saying, "I will be there for you, I'll be your best friend, I'll love you forever and I'm so glad you're here!! Every older sibling knows this feeling.

The closest sibling in age to me is my younger brother and we have always been extremely close. We would stay up at night just talking about the future and dreaming together. We made up our very own games--like I'll say sometime to the wall and you have to guess what I said..lol. We even cried whenever the other got a spanking!

While pregnant I prayed that my children would bond well and so far I'm still amazed that VJ hasn't shown any signs of jealousy towards his brother. Baby P coos to call him and he shows most personality when his big brother talks and laughs with him. It's the best! So in love with the love they share :)

Be Anxious for Nothing...Stress & My Response

Somewhere I've lost the ability to relax. I'm not sure exactly when it happened but the question of how needs little thought for a response.

Today I decided to spend some time with myself and take advantage of the much talked about "ME TIME". I was sitting in the sandwich shop with the amazingly perfect sun shinning through the glass window and all I could think of was, "I must hurry up and eat so that I can get back home and relieve my husband of his daddy duty--after all it's my job to take care of VJ." The guilt crept in, my thoughts started racing and I realized that something is definitely wrong when I can't even enjoy a moment. God could have sent that sunshine especially for me and I would've missed it. A peaceful moment that I so desperately needed. Anxiety takes the fun out of everything.

The truth is that I can't even take a nap without worrying that my toddler would wake up and call for me soon. To be honest I have always been a person that allowed stressful situations to take a tole on me--but the sleepless nights and less time connecting with God has caused it to catapult into something that can no longer allow to develop. I'm now learning that patience, peace and calmness isn't a trait that some people are just blessed with. It's a necessity for a sane human being! Many things about successful mothering are elusive but peace of mind is something that I must achieve to ensure that I keep my sanity.

There will always be chores to do, children screaming I NEED, I WANT, I HAVE TO, and a number of other unpredictable moments in time that cause stress. However, I've realized that my response is all I have control over. I cannot afford to get caught up in the typhoon because my family needs me to be whole. I will not feel guilty going to the nail shop or taking an extra 5 minutes in the bath because when I take care of myself my family will in turn have a healthier, happier me.

Paul in his God given wisdom wrote;

" Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus."

Philipians 4:6-7

These verses are so brilliant! This means that by giving my requests to God I will in turn receive a peace that don't even make sense--when I should be stressed, depressed, fearful and worried the Lord will keep me. I find the greatest promise is that He would guard my mind! So the next time I feel pulled in a million places and my heart starts racing and my emotions get the best of me I'd simply say, "Take it Lord."

Oh gosh...where do I begin? My bff vmarie401 invited me to the Women Of Faith "Imagine" Conference in Seattle. I wasn't quite sure what to expect but on our way there we were chatting about different challenges we face as women. To my astonishment, every issue I've been struggling with was miraculously touched on. We had so much fun!!! We laughed, cried, sang, prayed and hugged! I was so blessed to be there.

The speakers were supercalifragilisticexpialidociously amazing! Luci Swindoll and Sheila Walsh spoke most candidly to my heart. Mary Mary ministered in song. It was so great to see both of them with their baby boys!! Talk about mamas taking it to another level. Natatlie Grant...omg!!! This beautiful lady, who is now about 5 weeks from her due date, brought the house to tears. She has to have an extra pair of lungs because there's no way a pregnant woman should be able to bellow like that! I especially love her song "Held" but she touched me with the song "Perfect People". She said that there's no such thing as perfect people just ones that are good at pretending. Preach it sista!! I'm trying to give up my goal of being a perfect mom and simply giving my child to God. I Can't Sleep Without You!!!

Meet the one that's been responsible for my wonderful night's rest! My sister-in-law let me use it while I was visiting her in Michigan and I loved it so much that it came back home with me. If I had to choose this pillow or all my luggage I would definitely choose the Leachco Back 'N Belly - Contoured Body Pillow, Ivory. It's a pregnant woman's best friend!

I'm now on my second pregnancy use and it's holding up quite well. It contours perfectly around my entire body so I never have to worry about waking up on your back or belly (sleeping on back can cause the weight of the baby to put pressure on the inferior vena cava blood vessel, decreasing placenta blood supply). I just love it! The only downside is that it's a barrier between me and my hubby but I just poke my foot out to touch his while we sleep :)

Definitely recommend this pillow for any pregnant mamas in need of a good night's rest!

Pretty soon they are both going to be off to College...lol. No...but really...don't you sometimes wish that you could step in and out of time to go back to the most memorable moments? Daily Sisterly Devotions

There is something about a relationship with God that just makes everything joyful! I realized that on the days that I began with prayer everything would go much smoother. Just by giving God a few moments of my time the dishes wouldn't pile up, I'd have lunch ready by noon, I didn't loose my peace and my to-do list was accomplished. I spoke to some older women for advice and they suggested having a prayer partner that I could have frequent prayer and devotions with. Let me tell you....it's been amazing!

I've been having daily over-the-phone devotions with a friend and it's been giving me so much strength! We sometimes battle against tiredness, our kids crying in the background and errands we need to get done but it's been working out! I'm so thankful for this special time of the day--where I can get into my corner and pray with a sister that's also seeking to become a Proverbs 31 woman. The journey continues...

Similac Recall On My Mind!!!

I just couldn't let this one go without putting a plug in for breastfeeding! According to news articles some Similac infant formulas are on recall for the possibility of beetle larvae being in them. My Trini accent, "buh wuh really goin' on here boy?" lol. I'm not very surprised. I've always wondered how they ensure that no contaminants get into these instant formulas. The safest bet to know that you're baby is getting the best possible nutrients is to breastfeed if possible.
I heard from a doctor last weekend that women--primarily African Americans, are choosing not to breastfeed at astonishing rates. I'm not sure if it's because we think that we're not producing enough milk, it seems to be too difficult or we've bought the lie that society feeds us that formula is the norm so it's best. Breastfeeding gives your child the best possible head start to a healthy life. Not to mention that it's convenient, cost nothing and you don't have to worry about if beetle particles are in it!
Come on ladies! Let's reclaim the use of our breasts for nurturing healthy, happy babies. They deserve it!!

Kid Cries For Tomatoes at Trader Joes :/

Picture this. I'm doing a quick in and out run at Trader Joe's--my list in mind and all--when my child just starts making a ruckus in the store for these Grape Tomatoes.I have a strict "cry all you want you won't get it if it's not on the list" policy. But how could I possibly say no to tomatoes?

While walking down the produce isle I always pray that he'll keep his peace. He yells "Mama...juice!!" So embarrassing lol. I think it's because I never go down the candy isle--I've always been prone to more savory foods. Sweet older ladies and well meaning grocery store workers give him lolly pops all the time. I just leave it in the wrapper and let him play with it.

The trick to getting kids to love fruits and veggies is to give it to them as soon as they can start solids and making them their primary snack. It also helps if you also eat them. Broccoli isn't my favorite but I've learned to like it for his sake. He eats it raw and it's the first thing he reaches for on the plate when it's a part of his meal. When I peel an orange I make a big deal of it. I smile and do a little dance as if it's the best thing since sliced bread--well, it kinda is! Any-who they say that the eating habits that a child develops at a young age lasts for a lifetime so I hope that he keeps it up!

20 Weeks Preggo Update!!

Hey y'all!
I'm officially half way!! Our little bean is getting bigger and we'll soon find out if it's a boy or girl :) Soooooooo exciting!!! I've been walking but still tired! It hits me like a ton of bricks! Daily nap time remains a staple in my schedule. The little one moves around a lot but is much less active than our son was. Hope that means it's a girl!! VJ points at my belly and says "bebe"...not quite sure if he's aware that an actual baby is in mommy's tummy.

I have some ideas for the kids' sleeping quarters so I'll run them by you. Thanks for your prayers and well wishes and a special thanks to my church sisters that are constantly encouraging me!!! Lotta luv!

Play-Date

I love play dates!! We had a chance to visit with Candy-Nicola and her cute little girl Baby Z yesterday. The kids got to play and we got to eat and catch up--what a win-win for both babies and mamas! It was awesome to see how VJ interacted with Baby Z. He was so kind, gentle and shared "her toys" with her..lol. He's gonna be such a great big brother! It was also too cute to see her fuss every time he left the room. Such a great buddy bonding experience :) Here are some pics:

18 weeks 6 days Preggo Update

Hi guys :)

So the second trimester is coming along well! God is so good and I thank Him for my growing family!! Here are some updates;

My belly is out there! Like really...it just popped out over the last 2 weeks and is now quite noticeable. Need to buy some maternity jeans!!
I feel baby's kicks a lot more now. It started with flutters at about 15 weeks and now it's more frequent.
My appetite seems to be shrinking. I eat when I'm hungry but it feels as if my stomach can't hold as much food as I'd like it to.
Exercise...hmm. The good news is that I've been walking at least 3 days out of the week. I'll build it up to everyday...pray for me!
I need a nap each day in order to function properly! I've been getting great rest at night thanks to my wonderful hubby that tends to the early morning needs of our toddler...however I still have these moments when my eyelids won't stay open.

Cloth Diapers for baby # 2!!!

I had this impression in my mind of what deciding to use cloth diapers would entail. The image led me back to the babyhood of my little sister and cousins. My mom and aunties--who sometimes recruited my aid--would fold these white blocks of cloth, pin it unto the baby and then put these interesting looking plastic covers over them. And then there was the laundering! Heating the diapers in a metal pail over the stove, then washing them over a tub (pre washing machine days) and line drying them. This caused me to develop a point black, absolutely not, cloth diapering isn't for me, I want to go green but won't mind being turquoise type of attitude with my first baby. However I've changed my mind :)
I began watching some moms talk about their experience with cloth diapering on Youtube and a visit with a friend that have decided to use them for her baby pretty much sold me! Cloth Diapers aren't at all what they used to be.

They do still have the prefold diapers with the pins of the past but most of the cloth diapers now are created with almost the convenience of the disposable ones. The upfront cost may put a dent in our wallets, however in the long term we'll end up saving a lot more. Not to mention the great impact we'll have on the environment. According to Green Baby by Susannah Marriott, diapers are the third largest global contributor to landfills and can take up to 500 years to decompose! Can you believe that?!

Achoooo! Stay At Home Moms Need Emergency Childcare!

How truly inconvenient it is for a stay-at-home mom (SAHM) to have a cold! I'm sitting here stuffed up, sore throat with a mild headache--while my son is in his room protesting his nap-time. This morning I thought, "wouldn't it be nice if I was a working mom. I could drop him off at daycare and just nurse myself back to health." But no siree...the thought quickly left my mind because that's not currently an option. I'm just pushing through it and trying my best to make sure me and my son don't starve--the house can be cleaned another day.

On a more serious note, what if I was really really ill? I've never given it much thought. In that case should I have an emergency childcare plan? It may be wise to get a list of other SAHMs that would be able to help me if I needed it. God, thank you for good health and forgive me for taking that for granted!

Best Travel Toys For Toddlers

I wanted to cry for 2 1/2 hours. I thought I had packed the toys that would keep my toddler occupied for the duration of our trip from Cali but I didn't. On top of that I was sleep deprived and was traveling without my hubby--WILL NEVER DO THAT AGAIN! Some sympathetic parents came to my aid and lent some toys that really helped to calm him down. Here are some of the winners:

He enjoyed sticking the Creative Hands Cool Foam Stickers - Zoo Animals at the back of the tray table! These were a big hit! Life saver!!

A family next to us gave him the Fisher-Price Doodle Pro Classic Orange and he loved it! It caught his attention for quite some time.

Formal/Cocktail Dress & The Baby Bump

I recently attended our friends' wedding in California and had to find a dress. Although my bump is that big yet it still was a challenge to find a dress that fit right. I was really happy to find this cute red dress from Forever 21. I had to wear a large because the medium wouldn't zip up but it still worked out well :)

Here are some things to consider when looking for a formal or cocktail dress while pregnant;

Empire waist dresses are most flattering because the waist line is raised above the natural waistline leaving room for the bump
A V or square neckline works better than jewel or turtle neck
Stay away from animal prints! I'm not sure why but they look a bit off on pregnant women
Embrace the bump and try a dress that shows it off
Avoid shapeless tent-like dresses--they hide your bump and can make you look a bit frumpy

I know that this pic is a bit blurry...but as you can see I've chopped off my hair. I've used chemicals to straighten my hair and after 11 months or so of transitioning from relaxed to natural I cut the straight ends off. I love it! I love being able to embrace all that I am naturally and want my child and future children to do the same :)

To achieve this look I used conditioner and applied Eco Styler Gel to small sections of wet hair and let it air dry. You can find the gel at Sally's Beauty Supply.

Book Of The Month: 101 Ways To Raise A Happy Toddler

I must say that no one could have prepared me for being a parent of a toddler. I remember looking at other people's kids, as a childless know-it-all, thinking--if that was my child he/she would not act like that! Ha...how the tables have turned. Toddler-hood is a stage in human development most people don't understand. Maybe because most of us cannot remember being toddlers.

This book is awesome! It's my latest library fix and I've learned so much! The author offers great insight into decoding the mind of these youngsters and gives practical ways to raise them to become happy, disciplined and well rounded.

Some things come natural to me such as not being afraid to co-sleep and making up songs and games; however, topics like don't sweat the tears, expect tantrums and don't whine back were Aha moments for me! I definitely recommend this book to anyone that has the rewarding yet sometimes clueless job of raising a toddler.

How To Be Alone...

I often envy the introverted stay at home moms that are genuinely comfortable with being alone. However, the extroverted feeler in me makes it quite difficult. I mean...my son is a human being and if taken literally I'm not really alone...but somehow feelings of loneliness do arise. Maybe its because I miss adult conversations at work that have nothing to do with work, going shopping without a purpose with friends or late night karaoke with church family that sing off key. My schedule now totally conflicts with my buddies in the working world and somehow this feeling of lonely entrapment wiggled itself into my head. I am determined to evict it. Being alone does not have to be lonely and this time that God has blessed me to spend with the second most important person in my life is a reason to be joyful everyday. Here's how I plan to embrace this time of solitude:

* Spend quality time in devotion daily
* Pick a subject that I've been wanting to learn i.e. "Self Sufficient Living, Interior Design & Adult Education" and utilize the free knowledge attainable in our local public library
* Turn the music up loud and practice my moves in the mirror
* Take time to stroll down a lane with specialty & vintage shops that offer varied experiences in contrast to the monotonousity (not a real word) of large retailers
* Perfect the art of organization and cleaning house

Stroller Crosswalk Safety

Yesterday my friend and I were taking our babies to the park when we heard the most heart wrenching sound--a mother desperately screaming because her baby and toddler were hit by a car as she used the crosswalk. As we stood on the sidelines, tearfully praying and looking on at the mom grieving over her toddler that kept going in and out of consciousness, I couldn't help but think that if we were crossing just a few minutes earlier it may have been one or both of our children laying on the asphalt.

The accident happened at a crosswalk void of traffic lights that's in the middle of a block on a very busy road. I overheard that the mother pressed the button to activate the flashing crossing lights and cars stopped for her but as she continued to cross one motorists did not see her crossing and slammed into her babies. The toddler walking alongside the stroller was in critical condition at is thankfully reported to be stable at the moment. This scene encouraged me to think of crosswalk safety when strolling with our little ones. It was totally an accident and the mother did everything right but hear are some tips to remember:

* Always strap baby in when operating a stroller. It can be a matter of life or death!
* Look both ways before crossing the street.
* Try to make eye contact with motorists to ensure that they see you crossing.
* Whenever given the option choose to cross where there are vivid traffic lights.
* Consider a twin stroller if you have two children that are close in age.

This incident isn't isolated. There are reports of many other stroller accidents. I pray that we can all be safe with our little ones as we share the road with fast and hefty vehicles and pray for the full recovery of the toddler and comfort to the distressed mom.

Lessons From My Mother

1. My mother thought me to love the unlovely. She taught me how to never hold grudges and to never wish unkind things upon anyone--not even the ones that have hurt me. God sees.

2. To always wear nice undies. Just in case I fainted on the street and my skirt or dress flew up to reveal what's hidden underneath...lol

3. Education is the golden ticket. Studying hard isn't an option and books come before boys. If you can't read, write, count or hold a proper conversation your chances are slim.

4. Foster a good relationship with my siblings because friends are fleeting but family lasts forever. Take care of them and do everything that I can to never bicker. Even if that means putting my feelings on the back burner.

5. To have no interest in bad boys. Boys with that smoked marijuana, didn't take school seriously, wore their pants to show their under garments, talked smack about girls, wore wife beaters and aimlessly spent an abnoxious amount of time on the street corner were an utter waste of my time.

6. She thought me that true love only comes around once and will resemble my dad in character. God is the giver of true love and when he comes never take him for granted. To love long and hard and that the grass is never greener on the other side.

7. To never borrow. She taught me that if I didn't have sugar to do without. Also, if I did find myself in debt to always stay true to my word and repay promptly.

8. To respect others--even those my age--in actions and words. To say please and thank you and to always wait my turn.

9. Humility. To never take the largest, most beautiful or last of anything. To always give another person the opportunity to choose first. She taught me how not to be boastful and to gently accept accolades from others.

10. How to cook. She taught me that the ability to prepare a visually appealing and palatable meal is a staple quality of a successful woman. When it comes to home economics eating out for every meal just isn't smart and that home cooked food tastes better anyway.

11. To take great care of my baby. By her example I've learned how to put my own goals and aspirations aside to take up the greatest job I'll ever have. To show an abundant amount of love, patience and kindness. And to always always be there to hold him when he needs me.

12. Finally, she taught me how to clean everything (something I'm still working on). She taught me how to properly clean windows by using soapy water, rinsing with clean water then drying with pages from the old news paper.

My Birth Plan

I found it so helpful to have a birth-plan before baby's debut. I talked it over with my Doctor in advance and it helped me to properly think through what I wanted my childbirth experience to be. Note that unexpected terns can occur and cause you to have a totally different birth experience than you initially planned, however it's still great to know what's ideal for you. Here's a look at my birth-plan:

- BIRTH PLAN -

We are pregnant with our first child and this delivery is very meaningful to us. We’ve taken a lot of time to study and become familiar with procedures that surround childbirth and have decided that a natural childbirth is best for us. We thank you in advance for supporting and respecting our choice.

LABOR

Oh To Be A Perfect Mom

I have this image in my head of what the perfect mom should be and the guilt of not attaining that goal is quite crippling. The fact is that trying to be a perfect mommy can drive you mad! Not to mention the additional weight of attempting to be a perfect wife/daughter/sister/friend!

I vow to just take it one day at a time--celebrating my accomplishments and asking God for the ability to regain my composure and to fill in what I lack. That said, here's what I celebrate today;

1. Cooking a meal of meatless meatball spaghetti & collard greens & watching the smiles on my baby and hubby's faces as they devour it.

2. Walking to the library with baby, dropping off my overdue books, reading 5 books to baby and checking out some more books.

3. Bathing myself & baby. That's an accomplishment!

4. Writing this blog post.

5. Taking the time to call a friend that I've been thinking about for a while.

The very elusive goal of perfection is meaningless so I'll just be the best me that I can be.

Petting the Alpacas

We went with a church group to visit Mak-Ky Corral Alpaca Farm. The children were delighted to pet and learn about Alpacas, Chickens, Ducks and cute Australian Shepherd puppies. It was great. That said, anyone who knows me know that I'd much rather admire animals from afar. I'm not the Terri Irwin type. However I found myself in a bit of a predicament. If I reveal to my son that I'm actually nervous to touch the animals then I'd transfer that unhealthy fear to him, on the other hand, if I pet the animals then I must face my own fears. In the end I chose to "man up" and smile through the discomfort of being terrifyingly close to the animals. In the end I had a great time and by little guy loved it!

Weekend in Whistler, BC

We were so honored when our friends asked us to celebrate their anniversary with them in Whistler, British Columbia--not to mention excited! It was truly amazing!!! I have to say that it seems like Canada got the better end of the stick! It's by far the most beautiful place I've been to in North America. Our weekend was spent laughing, hiking, biking, relaxing by the lakes and the pool, eating and just oooooing and ahhhhing at all the sites.

On Leaving Baby Overnight
I must say though that it was quite an ordeal leaving my little munchkin overnight for the first time. As we where getting ready to leave in the morning the tears kept streaming down. My hubby asked what was wrong and I felt a bit embarrassed to tell him that it was because I'd miss our little tiger--after all, big girls aren't supposed to cry. We dropped him off at grandma and grandpa's house and explained that we would be leaving. On our way out we waved goodbye and he was already having so much fun that he just said "ba-ba" without a fuss! I was soooooo relieved :) I called about a million times and I think he got tired of talking to us because he started to put the phone on the ground and wave bye bye before we even ended the conversation...lol. It was really good for the hubby and I to spend some quality time with each other and great friends!

Take a look at my patio container garden this year. I purchase my seeds from Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds--they're the best!! For the soil I use Compost, Peat Moss and Organic Miracle Grow. You don't have to have much space or time to keep up with a container garden.

My Favorite Pregnancy Foods

The thing that I enjoy most about pregnancy is the pure joy that eating brings! Placing everything else aside--eating a well balanced diet is by far the most important job you'll have during pregnancy and also while breastfeeding. I've assembled a list of the foods that bring me most pleasure while pregnant. Here goes...

Organic Yogurt - A great source of protein and calcium and other vitamins and minerals. It's really important for healthy bones and muscle growth. I've also heard that yogurt is awesome for the prevention of yeast infections. The current recommendation is 4 servings of milk products per day.

Eggs - I had to have my egg sandwich for breakfast while pregnant with baby! Be sure to get the free range eggs--if you have access to a farmers market that the best! Eggs provide protein, vitamins and minerals including B 12 and vitamin A. 2 servings per day.

Tofu - An excellent source of vegetarian protein! It also provides iron and calcium. When buying tofu looks for organic and non GMO options. My favorite tofu recipe is here!

Wild Pacific Salmon - This is by far my favorite food of all time! An additional bonus to living in the Pacific North West is easy access to fresh wild salmon. Salmon has a range of good stuff including Omega 3, a whole bunch of vitamins B's and vitamin D. It's also low in mercury and tastes amazing!

Collard Greens - Normally I don't like greens but during pregnancy and breastfeeding it's like somethings goes off in my brain and I can't get enough! Organic collard greens is rich in vitamin A and B complex which is necessary to help your body utilize the protein you get from other foods. It has a long list of other vitamins and minerals including folic acid :) Remember you need 2 servings of greens per day.

Brown Rice - This is my pantry staple. It's a great source of carbohydrates--which you need to fuel your body and has a great list of other nutritional benefits.

Kiwi - Kiwi is one of the highest sources of vitamin C! It aids in providing a defense system against infection.

Avocado - A a great source of dietary fats, folate and potassium! It also helps to adsorb fat soluble vitamins. We need 3 servings of fats and oils daily.

Lentils - By far my favorite legume! This bean is a great source of folate, protein and iron. It also provides great fiber. I love making lentil soups or eating it with rice and fried fish!

Squash - This is my favorite yellow vegetable! It's high in vitamin A, B's, C, E and K. Vitamin A plays a great role in cell reproduction and fighting various infections. I had some vegetable soup with squash yesterday and it was sooooo yummy!

Sea Salt - When I'm pregnant I crave savory foods. I add sea salt to everything--including grapefruit! lol... Salt is an essential nutrient. It helps to promote good blood flow through your body and placenta. Salt your food to taste!

Water!!! - I always keep a bottle of water handy! Every functioning system in our body greatly depends on water. Water accounts for 3/4 of your baby's total birth weight and if you think about it--your baby is swimming in the stuff. If you're breastfeeding I cannot stress enough how vital water is! I was always tired and even fainted a few times while breastfeeding my son and dehydration was the culprit! So drink drink drink!

I was vegetarian before getting pregnant, however my body craved the things I lacked. It's always best to follow your gut--literally! There are many vegans and vegetarians that plan their meals very well and have healthy babies. If you need to substitute for protein, iron and other vitamins you must be very careful!

How To Keep Baby Out Of Kitchen

About a week ago I was pleasantly surprised while doing dishes. I'm used to baby coming into the kitchen, reaching into the dish washer and pulling the forks and bowls out while I made a poor attempt at stopping him. But this time was different.

Daddy sat at the dinner table having a conversation with me while baby just stood at the end where the carpet meets the tile and kept yelling. At first I was so engrossed with my conversation that I didn't realize baby's antics. After about 5 minutes or so I noticed him and asked my hubby what he thought was wrong with him. He then said, "He wants to come into the kitchen." I replied, "He knows how to come into the kitchen, what's the problem?" Daddy then informed me that he had trained him not to enter the kitchen. I couldn't believe it!!!

Apparently while I was gone for the day my hubby was cooking and cleaning the kitchen while baby kept on interrupting him. Each time baby came into the kitchen he would pick him up, take him to the couch and put down some pillows as baby's obstacle course so that he would have some time before baby made his way back to the kitchen. At first he enjoyed it and laughed...but after the 6th or 7th time he got quite agitated that dad kept placing him on the couch. Eventually he stopped where the carpet ended and protested--but didn't enter the kitchen. He got the message that the kitchen was a no entry zone.

I realized that all my prior endeavors for keeping him out of the kitchen were fruitless because he just didn't understand what I wanted him to do. It has been a week and he hasn't entered the kitchen while I was doing dishes or cooking :)

I know this technique takes quite a bit of patience...if you decide to try it let me know if it works for you. For now I'm enjoying my gate-less barrier :)

Natural Remedy For Stretch Mark Removal

For my post pregnancy stretch marks I use a mixture of shae butter, coconut oil, sweet almond oil, olive oil and rosemary oil. Remember, it takes time for dark stretch marks to go away. How To Keep A Clean House

The thing I dreaded most recently happened. My mother-in-love came over totally unannounced and my house was a total mess. I was ashamed. I've been good at keeping up a facade--but in all actuality the only thing I did was rush to clean up when I planned on having visitors.

I come from a lineage of super tidy, super organized, super clean women. My mother--who resides in the Caribbean--sweeps the yard everyday. She even makes a point to pick up each leaf that's fallen from our mango trees. As if that's not enough, she also sweeps the road at the front of her house. I've spent years wondering why I didn't get that gene.

In my distress I called up by best friend--whose house is continuously clean even when you just randomly decide to pay her a visit. I went on and on about how I was just so different from her and how my inability to keep a clean house somehow was grandiosely connected to my success/failure of being a wife and mother. Then she said these magical words, "Why don't you just assign a day to clean the bedrooms and another day to do the bathrooms?" Ding! (Lightbulb goes on over my head). Why didn't I think of that!

I assigned Tuesdays to bathroom cleaning, Thursdays to Bedroom cleaning and committed to making sure the kitchen and living areas are tidied daily. I'm happy to report that my house is now clean--even though I don't expect anyone to be visiting soon.

I've got to tell you guys about this CD! I got a huge box from my hubby's aunt that was filled with baby books and a couple CDs she bought at the Seattle Library Auction. I looked curiously at this CD, hesitated and relunctantly decided to give it a go. I watched in shock as my otherwise reserved child turned into a dancing machine..lol! It was so much fun! I find myself humming the songs as randomly throughout the day. "I Like Blue Lemurs and I don't know why....do do do doom doom do do do doom doom!"

This morning was a tough one. I woke up, looked into the mirror at a face totally beat from the wear and tear mommy-hood and knew that it was time to break out the Elizabeth Arden Mask. My Baby Story #1

I'll try to give you a snapshot of my experience.

On the day before my due date DH and I spent the entire day at church and because there was also an evening concert that he had to conduct the audio for I got no chance to go home to rest. I started to have more and more of a bloody show and Braxton Hicks contractions at about 2pm. At about 7pm I got 2 "real" contractions. I then told DH and started walking around the church. I knew that it could still be false labor so I didn't want to get too excited.

We then got home and went to bed. As soon as we both laid down to rest--at about 11:30 pm-- I got another contraction. Then two more quickly followed at 10 mins apart. After the third contraction I started to cry and told DH that if this is only the third one I definitely wont be able to make it until the end. He then reassured me and gave me the confidence I needed to deal with one contraction at a time. By 12:30 am they were coming every 4 mins and lasting an average of 45 secs. I was still able to smile and get stuff done during the contractions--however I was sooooooooooooo tired!

We then got to the hospital at about 1:45 am-- I was about 5 centimeters dilated. The staff already had my birth plan and knew exactly what I wanted. I labored in many positions--in the tub, walking..walking...walking, on the birthing ball and facing the wall with DH massaging my back. I eventually felt sorry for my DH and told him to get some rest while my cousin and friend/nurse helped me. We then went walking in the hallway--this was about 6:30 am. The time really went by quickly. When we got back I labored in the tub some more and started to feel vaginal pressure. I then went to the bed for another check and I was about 8 centimeters. I then got very annoyed at DH sleeping and told him to "go wash his face!!!" this is how I knew that was about to transition soon.

Transition was everything I studied it to be. I vomited, felt hopeless, took all my clothes off and just wanted it to be over. I started to push and my bag of waters finally broke. My nurse then discovered that my cervical lip was still in the way. I had to stop pushing and decided to labor on the birthing ball. This is when the Bradley Method class came in the most handy. In these last 15 mins of managing the pain I remembered that each contraction has an end and I started to focus on the breathing rather than on the pain. Then it was time again to push.

Pushing with the gush from my broken bag of waters felt great!!!!!! I loved that part! I just wanted to get him out!!!!! Then his head came out..OMG...the most burning sensation ever! Not very long after that he was out. My big slimy bundle of joy was finally on my chest at 10:39 am! It was soooooo worth it. He was alert and ready to eat!

Here are some tips. Please get as much information about breast feeding as possible! It was definitely very challenging for the first 4 days. I cried and cried and finally called a La Leche League leader that really helped me. Take each contractions one at a time and remember to breathe breathe breathe. Drink a lot of fluid to stay hydrated and periodically suck on some honey...it helps to rejuvenate your energy! Dads, please don't be alarmed when your wife turns into someone you don't know. The most helpful thing that DH did for me was to not take anything personally :) We had planned for him to "catch" the baby but I didn't want him to leave my side. He did so well to tune into what I needed...even though it changed every minute.
